Jin Shin Do® Bodymind Acupressure®

“Jin Shin Do” means “The Way of the Compassionate Spirit.” Jin Shin Do® Bodymind Acupressure® (JSD) uses gentle yet deep finger pressure on specific acu-points and verbal Body Focusing techniques, to help release “armoring” or chronic tension, balance the “Qi” or energy, and improve vitality. This clothes-on method helps relieve stress- and trauma- related problems. A unique synthesis of traditional Japanese acupressure technique, classic Chinese acupuncture and acupressure theory, Taoist philosophy, Qigong (breathing and exercise techniques), Reichian segmental theory and principles of Ericksonian psychotherapy, JSD acupressure was originated by psychotherapist Iona Marsaa Teeguarden.

Based on the understanding of both superficial and deep meridian relationships as they are described by the Five Elements Theory, JSD uses the combination of points, the order in which they are held, and specific finger pressure to help release muscular tension and balance the flow of energy throughout the entire body.

Energy flows through our bodies like water flows through waterways. When waterways get blocked by debris, water begins to accumulate upstream of the block, causing flooding, and there becomes a deficit or drought below. In our bodies, when the energy pathway is blocked by muscle tension from stress or injury, it causes similar surpluses and deficiencies that can then manifest as stress, headaches, pain, insomnia, and a host of other ailments.

Using Eriksonian Body Focusing techniques, the practitioner guides the recipient to tune into the body and the recipient becomes an active participant in releasing the muscular tension. By getting more in touch with the body during a treatment, one is able to become more aware and release the muscle tension on their own after the treatment.

JSD acupressure promotes a pleasant trancelike state, in which one can relax and move out of the head and into the body, accessing feelings and inner wisdom. The treatment generally lasts about an hour. The recipient, while often participating in the release of the tension, usually feels very relaxed and rejuvenated afterwards. Many leave a session saying they feel as though they have just had a long nap, after which they woke up feeling more calm, clearheaded, alert, and happy.
